Riding at Polwhele House

Nestled between our rolling lawn and peaceful walled garden, and accessed through the beautiful ancient arched doorway – the oldest part of Polwhele, lies our wonderful Riding School. A tranquil haven with excellent facilities, and a range of perfect ponies and horses ready to teach our children from 3 years upwards, in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.

A wide variety of activities are on offer, from obstacle courses in our all weather arena, to show jumping, dressage, mounted games, gymnastic polework, hacking through our woodland trails, and cross country jumping within our 30 acre estate. Skills are developed and displayed in regular school competitions for all levels in Dressage, Show Jumping and Gymkhanas.

In addition to riding lessons, children have the opportunity to learn about pony care and management in After School Clubs and School Holiday Camps and Activities. Displays and Competitions are enjoyed by all levels, and children in years 7 & 8 may apply to become a school groom. Groom’s duties include bringing in the ponies from their paddocks in the morning, feeding and grooming them in preparation for the day ahead, plus stewarding for School Competitions.

We also offer unmounted therapeutic sessions for children who may need some help with self confidence, communication, anxiety and emotional well being. Sessions can include grooming, bathing, leading, feeding, negotiating tasks and obstacles together and developing skills whilst learning how our body language and emotions can affect those around us. Our ponies are so perceptive, and the best listeners!

With the highest 5 star rating, we are also affiliated to The Pony Club, the World’s largest equestrian youth organisation, and children can join our Pony Club Centre and partake in rallies, work towards badges and internationally recognised qualifications. Teams and individuals can enter local and national competitions, from quizzes and art competitions, to online ridden competitions and local or area ridden championships.

The stable yard is a special relaxed place, where many pupils enjoy spending time riding, or participating in anything from mucking out the stables to learning how to tack up, or plait and bath a pony ahead of travelling to an equestrian competition. Many of our children enjoy simply spending time with our lovely friendly ponies.
