Riding at Polwhele House

Our Facilities

Tucked between our woodland and the peaceful walled garden – accessed through the historic arched doorway, the oldest part of Polwhele – is our well-equipped Riding School. It offers a calm, supportive environment for children aged 3 and up to learn and grow in confidence around horses and ponies.

Our extensive programme includes a wide range of equestrian activities, from obstacle courses in the all-weather arena to show jumping, dressage, mounted games, gymnastic polework and woodland hacking.

Pupils can also take part in regular school competitions in Dressage, Show Jumping and Gymkhanas to develop and showcase their skills.

Riding Opportunities For All

Children from Reception all the way to Year 10 are able to book in for riding lessons that take place during the School Day.

All riding levels from beginner to experienced are encouraged to participate in displays and competitions.

In addition to riding lessons, children can take part in Holiday Clubs where they learn essential skills in pony care and stable management.

We also offer unmounted therapeutic sessions designed to support children who may benefit from help with self-confidence, communication, anxiety or emotional well-being. These sessions focus on building trust and awareness through activities such as grooming, leading, feeding, and completing tasks alongside the ponies. Children learn how body language and emotions influence interactions – both human and equine – while gaining valuable social and emotional skills in a calm, supportive environment.

5 star rating

In 2025, our Riding School was awarded 5 stars – the highest possible rating – following a recent inspection by Cornwall Council. This prestigious accreditation reflects the exceptional care, safety and standards maintained at our stage.

The stable yard is a welcoming and relaxed space where pupils enjoy spending time – whether riding, mucking out, or learning practical skills such as tacking up, plaiting and bathing ponies in preparation for equestrian competitions. Many children also take pleasure in simply being around our kind, friendly ponies, building confidence and connection through everyday interaction.
