Equestrian Scholarships
To meet the differing needs and abilities of children at various stages, the Junior Equestrian Scholarship is open to pupils from Year 5. The programme introduces young riders to essential yard duties and teaches them how to work as a team to care for the ponies. Junior Scholars receive an additional riding lesson each week, a paid session, and take part in two Grooms sessions.
While pupils benefit from exceptional opportunities to learn from professional equestrians, expectations are tailored to be age-appropriate and less demanding than those of our Senior Scholars. The Junior Scholarship is designed as a pathway into the Senior Scholarship in Year 5, for enthusiastic and committed riders wishing to progress further.
As Senior Scholars, pupils may be selected to represent the school in a variety of riding events, continue learning from equestrian professionals, and develop a deeper understanding of horses, including their health, fitness, and nutrition. When suitable horses are available, scholars may also take part in the process of backing a pony – a valuable and rewarding life skill for dedicated equestrians.
Senior Scholars receive two riding lessons each week and participate in regular Grooms sessions.
Scholarship Opportunities
We understand that the biggest barrier to success in sport is the time and consistent training required to reach full potential. Our Equestrian Scholarship package adds substantial value to the school experience and includes:
- Two riding lessons in each full week of term (Dressage, Show jumping & Cross country)
- Opportunity for Equestrian Scholars to bring their own pony for one free session in each half term, to assist in formulating training plans and goal setting
- Option to join our Linked Pony Club Centre and train towards internationally recognised Pony Club qualifications
- Invitation to represent Polwhele House Riding School at local schools show jumping and Pony Club competitions throughout the year
- Educational Equestrian school Trips/visits
- Practical Pony Care training at Grooms Duties weekly, feeding into Pony Club qualifications
- An active role in the running of the stable yard and opportunity to attend school holiday activities and Pony Club rallies
- Up to 40% off school fees, depending on level of scholarship
What A Scholar Will Gain From The Programme
We equip our Scholars with the knowledge and understanding required to ride and assess a pony, and formulate a schooling plan to improve the way of going of the pony and actively train for development towards a set goal/plan of action. Scholarship is therefore a long-term process alongside school attendance, rather than a short term or one year experience and scholars are asked to sign a contract which ensures continued attendance.
Suitable applicants will be invited to attend an Assessment Day, to include a Riding Assessment (walk, trot, canter & small jump)
An interview with the Head will follow a successful assessment, after which a scholarship decision will be made.
