Dear Parents
Here begins my final letter of the school year! I hope they have kept you informed of all that goes on at Polwhele.
Phone Lines As you will have been aware we have had a real headache with our lines. They started to play up on Thursday and it was only yesterday that BT was able to come and address the problem.
The Pirates of Penzance Thank you to everyone who was involved in anyway with the production. Our audiences were fantastic and so supportive. A huge thank you to the PHS for the excellent bar.
National Award for Polwhele The Royal Society of Chemistry has awarded our Year 7 a specially-created prize for their entry in this year’s Bill Bryson chemistry competition. Although we did not win, the judges decided that our entry, entitled ‘Sports Drinks’, was of such a high standard that it should be recognised. As a result, we will receive £100 and each pupil will receive a £10 W H Smith voucher and a certificate. We intend to purchase some microscopes that can be linked to a TV screen, and a computer.
Presentation Afternoon This begins at 2.30pm. I anticipate that it will take about 50 minutes. After that the leaving pupils and all parents are invited to tea. If the weather is on our side, we will gather on the gravel car park. If not, we will be squeezed into the CDT and Art Room.
Cathedral Choir On Sunday evening the Cathedral Choir were joined by the Boy Choristers and men from Exeter Cathedral. To have a Choir of more than 50 was quite superb. The Choir continues until next Sunday when we say good-bye to the leaving boys and to Robert Sharpe.
Key Stage 2 Results Many of you will have seen the news item at the weekend concerning the delay in publishing the results. In the past we have either given the results out before the end of term or have posted them with the reports. We have received no indication as to when we will receive them.
Nursery Beach Trip I am pleased to hear that the Family Day at the beach was so good – lots of fun and games and we are grateful to the RNLI for their assistance.
Gymkhanas The weather was far from perfect but it was good to continue the events. I hope all the children enjoyed the games and now have walls festooned with rosettes. Thank you to Alison, to all her helpers and to the maintenance crew for preparing the sand school.
Barbecues Yesterday we had the Set Point Winners’ barbecue and tonight Charles and Olwynne host the leavers’ barbecue. The weather has not helped us, but that has been the theme for the term!
Killiow Everyone involved in this should have received a letter last week with details of rehearsals and information on the dress code. The rehearsal on Tuesday 5th August will be at Polwhele. They children will be required for approximately one hour at all rehearsals at Polwhele. We are not able to run a minibus to the site each evening as Norah and I have to be there very early. Please do try to share lifts to ease the traffic flow and save on petrol.
Whole School Photo Please do collect these from the school office before the end of term.
Spanish Club I do hope everyone who wanted to be involved with this next year has returned their forms and cheques to the office.
Games Kit We have asked the children to take home all of their PE / Games Kit by tonight. Please will you check that there is no kit belonging to anyone else? Lost kit is frequently found in someone else’s bag.
Leaving Families / Leaving Staff At the end of any school year, we say good-bye to a number of people. Carol Waters, Jaime McLean and Kirstie ffrench-Constant are leaving the staff, pupils are leaving for new schools and families ending their association with the school. I will get the chance to talk about the staff and children tomorrow, but, to the families, I trust your association with your new schools will be a happy one and please do keep us informed about your children’s progress.
End of Term / Next Term We finish school at 3.40pm tomorrow. Next term will start on Wednesday 10th September.
Norah and I wish you and your family a very happy and restful summer holiday and for those returning, we look forward to welcoming you back to another year at Polwhele.
Best wishes
Jo Mason
